California Dems Post Modest Gains

Votes are still being counted in close races but California Democrats may have gained three or four Assembly seats.

They fell short of the 2/3 majority needed to pass budgets without Republican help in the Senate.

One Democratic Assembly seat may have fallen to Republican Danny Gilmore.

The fact that there were switches in party control is notable in a state where no legislative or congressional seats changed hands last time around.

About

GOVERNING Politics is the place for news and analysis on campaigns and elections. If there's a ballot measure in California, a legislative election in Alabama, a mayoral election in Anchorage or a governor's race in Rhode Island, GOVERNING Politics probably is writing about it. We love everything about state and local politics, from polls and campaign ads to policy debates and demographic trends.
