CA-Gov: This Guy Has a Chance, I Guess

It's easy to make fun of celebrities who think they are politicians. Val Kilmer for governor of New Mexico? Holy structural budget deficit, Batman! Charles Barkley for governor of Alabama? He does realize that Alabama is so anti-gambling that they don't even have a state lottery, right? Tim McGraw for governor of Tennessee? Jon Bon Jovi for governor of New Jersey? The list goes on and on.
But, then you have to remember that people made fun of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jesse Ventura and Al Franken. And each of them got the last laugh.
It's in that spirit that I present to you the news that Georges Marciano, the co-founder of Guess jeans, is running for governor of California as an independent. From the Associated Press story we learn a few things about this quasi-celebrity.
He was last in the news in 2007, when he bought what then was the largest top-quality, brilliant-cut white diamond ever to appear at auction. The 84.37-carat diamond sold for just under $16.2 million.
He doesn't have a voting record for opponents to criticize, unless they criticize his lack of a voting record:
Marciano registered to vote as a Democrat in Los Angeles County in 1992, but re-registered as a decline-to-state voter before last year's presidential election, according to the county registrar-recorder's office.
County records indicate he has never cast a vote, spokeswoman Marcia Ventura said.
And, he isn't articulating clear positions on the issues yet.
The 62-year-old Beverly Hills resident plans to campaign on a platform that focuses on exposing and eliminating political corruption and putting "the power of government back in the people's hands," said his publicist, Rod Harrell.
Can this guy win? Your guess is as good as mine.
