As the Kwame Kilpatrick era comes to close, I can't help but think that it shouldn't have ended this way. It should have ended three years ago.
That's when Kilpatrick was up for reelection after a rocky first term. Everyone expected him to lose to challenger Freman Hendrix. And they had good reason to expect that. Just look at the final polling in the race, as compiled by SurveyUSA:
Kilpatrick's improbable comeback is what set the stage for his scandalous second term. I'm guessing that almost everyone in Detroit -- and especially Kilpatrick himself -- wishes it had never happened.

GOVERNING Politics is the place for news and analysis on campaigns and elections. If there's a ballot measure in California, a legislative election in Alabama, a mayoral election in Anchorage or a governor's race in Rhode Island, GOVERNING Politics probably is writing about it. We love everything about state and local politics, from polls and campaign ads to policy debates and demographic trends.
