The Sacramento Bee reports that John Burton, the former congressman and state Senate president pro tem, is all but assured of becoming the California Democratic Party chair at the party's convention this coming weekend.
That state party chairmanship has occasionally been a holding area for politicians waiting to make a comeback. Jerry Brown, for instance, served as chair during the 1990 cycle. But Burton is 76 so future dreams of glory seem unlikely. More likely Burton, ousted from his last job by term limits, misses the action.
