As you may have read by now, not only are there reports that Rudy Giuliani isn't running for governor next year, there are also reports that he is running for U.S. Senate next year and running for president in 2012. These reports don't make a lot of sense (if he wants to run for president, why is he running for Senate?), but we'll see.
In the process of reading articles about Giuliani's plans, though, I stumbled across something interesting in the Wall Street Journal:
So far, former Rep Rick Lazio is the only declared GOP gubernatorial candidate. Lazio, who lost to Hillary Clinton in the 2000 Senate race, is pushing an overhaul of the state legislature -- widely considered dysfunctional - by collapsing the Senate and Assembly into a single legislative body.
Along with angst about government, I could easily see term limits and proposals for part-time legislatures coming back into vogue. I wonder whether Lazio is on to something -- and suggestions for unicameral legislatures will be part of that conversation too.
