What to Watch at 9

Will Democrats end the GOP's 40-year-plus stranglehold on the New York Senate? We'll know fairly soon at this point.

Democrats will also be looking to take control of the Wisconsin House. They have their eyes on the Texas House, too, but that's certainly a longer shot.

The Arizona Senate has been a quirky place in early years. Democrats need two seats to tie, which happened back in 2000.

Arizona also is home to several key ballot measures, including a proposed ban on gay marriage, a measure that would remove parts of Arizona's landmark law targeting employers that hire illegal immigrants and a preemptive strike against universal health care.

Colorado's ballot is just as busy as Arizona's. The hot topics include a "right-to-work" proposal, a measure that would define life as beginning at conception and an effort to modify the state's Taxpayer's Bill of Rights.

About

GOVERNING Politics is the place for news and analysis on campaigns and elections. If there's a ballot measure in California, a legislative election in Alabama, a mayoral election in Anchorage or a governor's race in Rhode Island, GOVERNING Politics probably is writing about it. We love everything about state and local politics, from polls and campaign ads to policy debates and demographic trends.
