With Minnesota's race finalized as a win for the Democrats, our map of changes in gubernatorial party control is complete. This year's election gains by Republican governors give the party control of 29 posts. Prior to the election, Democrats held a narrow majority of 26 governorships. The numerical changes are expected to be matched by changes in the approach to economic recovery and redressing budget deficits. Importantly, the numerical changes also increase Republican influence in the state-based process of redrawing congressional districts in advance of the 2012 presidential election. Changes in gubernatorial party are marked with a yellow triangle – the delta symbol that marks a change in direction.
