Unemployment Rates Fall in 36 States

Illinois and California added the most jobs last month as unemployment rates declined in 36 states, according to figures released today by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Illinois gained approximately 30,000 non-farm jobs in October, while California added 25,700. Wisconsin, which lost 9,700 non-farm jobs in October, was the only state to report a significant monthly decline in employment, according to the bureau.

Still, unemployment rates remained relatively unchanged in most states. The national seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate is 9.0 percent.

Unemployment rates dipped in Alabama, Michigan and Minnesota by 0.5 percent, the largest percentage decline. Five states recorded slight unemployment rate increases.

The western portion of the U.S. recorded the highest regional unemployment for the month at 10.3 percent. Nevada’s unemployment rate of 13.4 percent remains the highest in the nation.

Unemployment rates are lowest in the northeast at 8.1 percent.

North Dakota, though, is home to the country’s lowest unemployment rate. The state’s seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate for October was 3.5 percent and it registered the largest year-over-year increase in employment.
