Nicole D. Porter is the director of advocacy for the Sentencing Project, heading its state and local advocacy on sentencing reform, voting rights and eliminating racial disparities in the criminal-justice system. The former director of the Texas American Civil Liberties Union's Prison and Jail Accountability Project, she was named a "New Civil Rights Leader" by Essence magazine in November 2014.

Porter received her master's degree in public affairs from the University of Texas at Austin, where her thesis addressed exploring self-employment among formerly incarcerated African-Americans, and her B.A. in international affairs from Johns Hopkins University. She also studied African politics at the University of Ghana.
