Jack Markell, a Democrat, served as governor of Delaware from 2009 to 2017 and as chair of the National Governors Association in 2012-13. Before being elected governor, he served three terms as state treasurer. Previously, he worked in senior management positions at Nextel and Comcast, as a consultant with McKinsey & Co. and as a banker at First Chicago Corp.

Markell holds an undergraduate degree from Brown University and an MBA from the University of Chicago.
