Sometimes in Youngstown, it is easy to forget that you are in the city. When the steel mills were booming back in the 1960s, Youngstown's population was 170,000. Since the mills shut down in the 70s, the population has declined to 82,000. I took this picture in the Oak Hill neighborhood, which is just five minutes south of downtown. The area used to be a densely-populated working-class neighborhood. Oak Hill has gradually emptied, one abandoned house at a time. The city has demolished so many vacant homes that there is more green space than houses. Text and Photos by
